Future Aspiration

Last week on Thursday our yr 7 and 8 team had the privilege to hear from 2 amazing speakers. Which were from Marcus Winter ( The Sand man) and also by  Louis  Gordon- Latty.

We first heard from Andrew Patterson who introduced us to Marcus and Louis. Andrew had quotes that inspired us, and the first he had said was “ Do more of what makes you AWESOME!!” Hearing and listening to what Andrew had to say really inspired me.  After he had spoken we got to hear from Marcus Winter.

It was great to hear how Marcus went from the streets to working in ships and over in Australia. What does he do for a living? Well Marcus Winter is a sand artist. Which he creates art with sand. Marcus started from Otara Markets to working on the streets in the city where he met Andrew Patterson, then went into Ships over in Australia.

He even talked about back in primary, when  he was always the last to finish off handwriting.  but now look where he is.  In the big shows and stadiums performing his very own art.

It was great to hear that when we grow older more things change. I can’t wait to be a Social Worker when Im older!!

How to Play Netball

Netball. How do you play it? In Netball there are 7 people on the court. Which are Goal Shoot, Goalkeeper, Goal Defense, Center, Wing Attack, Wing Defense, Goal Attack . Usually in a team you will probably need 9 people . 7 people on a court then 2 subs.

How to pass a ball in Netball : Passing a ball is quite easy. Focusing on the person you are passing it too is also a big deal. In netball you can intercept while the other team is passing. Like in rugby, which is different because its called a cut.

The Rules : In Netball you are not allowed to run with the ball which is called Stepping. Also you're only allowed to hold the ball within three seconds. Defending your partner too, is huge you have to be three feet away, from you opponent.

Netball is very famous and a entertaining game to play. Netball is also a sport that girls only play. Sometimes there are mixed teams too. Its a very popular Sport.

So guys play fair in Netball and it’ll be a Great Game.

Science Experiment. Part 2 Paper Experiment

Science experiment:

Question: What will happen to the sound if I change the shape of a piece of paper? (e.g. from a flat shape to a funnel shape)

Links to research about Sound:
Hypothesis: (What do you think will happen?) e.g. I think that it will the sound will get louder and quieter every time I change the directions.

Materials needed:
A Flat Paper, Your self, Tape, and a tissue.
Experiment (procedure):

e.g. Step 1 - First hold a flat piece of paper against your ear. Block your other ear with your hand. Get your partner to speak to you. What is the sound like? Can you hear clearly?

Step 2 - Next, roll the piece of paper into a funnel shape. Put the funnel against your ear. Face the funnel towards your partner and listen to them speak. What does it sound like? Can you hear clearly?

Step 3 - Next, face the funnel to the side while your partner speaks to you. Does it make a difference to the sound that you can hear?

Step 4 - Put some cotton balls or tissue paper into the funnel to block one end. Does it make a difference to the sound you hear? Is the sound quality the same?

Step 5 - Next, roll the piece of paper up and face one end of the paper roll towards your partner. Listen to your partner speak. Is there a difference to the sound you hear?

Step 6 - Finally, turn to the side with your paper roll and listen to your partner speak. What is the sound like?

Data (What happened?)

Shape/object/materials
Results:
1
flat piece of paper
clearer? Didn’t make any difference.
2
funnel facing to the front towards partner
It actually sounds really loud
3
funnel facing to the side (opposite partner)
Its more quieter than when it was facing towards my partner.
4
cotton ball blocking funnel
I could hear echos
5
rolled up piece of paper (facing to the front)
It was really loud. It even made my ears hurt.
6
rolled up piece of paper (facing to the side)
It was normal.

Observations:
When I put the flat piece of paper to my ears it did not make any difference. But then when I got to fold it, it finally made quite louder sound. As I switched the funnel to the opposite side of my partner It was more quieter than when it was facing towards my partner. Then it was time to put the tissue in it and the weird thing was that all I could hear was echos. The rolled piece of paper - It was REALLY Loud, and it even made my ears hurt. Then it was finally the rolled up piece of paper (facing to the side) Which was normal.

Conclusion:

Just like my hypothesis said. And my Observation. Every time I had switched my funnel to the opposite side of my partner it was quieter and different.

Summary Article

We were reading a book about a little Boy named Dylan, which was born deaf. The first implant was funded by the Health System in June 2011 .Dylan’s parents tried really hard to raise $50,000 to pay for his second cochlea implant which was done in September 2012. Dylan’s parents are now able to pay more attention their son. Dylan’s hearing really improved and his speech and development. The government will now pay for two cochlear implants for children under six years old starting in July.

What Can I hear??

There are many sounds around us. Teenagers nowadays enjoy listening to Music because it calms people down. Around our community we hear a lot of things. A lot of cars whizzing by, yelling and also announcements.

At home the most annoying sound is my brother, cause he always got to shout, cry, laugh loud and do annoying stuff!! Especially when he talks, he talks forever and gets in trouble. And at school I hate the sounds of growling.

Also the sound of Traffic Jams. Why? Well a lot of horns going by. And also traffic going very slowly. Ugh that is truly annoying right. Trying to get through to school and work.

There are so many sounds we can here around our environment and community. Such as sounds like lots of talking, kids crying and also yelling. Around our community, we hear a lot of things. Like today I had heard that the Sydney Roosters are going to play against the West Tigers. WOAH!!
